Image Spam: The Latest Attack on the Enterprise Inbox

Over the past year global spam volumes have tripled, and Secure Computing Research has seen an increase of 50 percent in just the past six weeks. Spam now accounts for nearly 90% of all email. In that same time, there has also been a tripling in the amount of spam that is image spam, which today accounts for 30 percent of all spam. Much harder to detect with conventional content analysis spam filters, image spam is typically much larger than normal text-based spam, consuming more bandwidth and storage. The typical call-to-action has changed to "hot stock tips" which rely on recipients bidding up the price of OTC stocks, which the spammers then dump for a profit.
